Three police officers perished and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who ran away subsequent to the explosion was located shortly later. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the property was subject to an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the detonation had taken place on a story above the doorway and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told local news, adding that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
