UN Lifts Sanctions on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.
He was appointed transitional president subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in the final month of 2024, concluding over a decade of domestic strife.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.
Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. America delisted the group from its registry of foreign terror groups during July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and allied countries for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
The upcoming meeting does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. In September, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.
